Based on manufacturer’s availability, our Laboratory offers three different tests for Corona virus infection.
- COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) RT-PCR Test: The test detects genetic material from the virus and is used to detect current infection. The test is typically performed on a nasopharyngeal swab. This test has relatively high sensitivity and specificity (low risk of being false positive or negative). The ideal time for testing is when symptoms are present or 4-5 days after exposure if asymptomatic. Rapid PCR test results are available same day Monday through Friday.
- COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) Rapid Antigen Test: Is designed to detect proteins from the virus that cause COVID-19 and, like the above test, is used to diagnose current infection. This test is performed in our office and results are typically available promptly. As with the PCR test (above), the ideal time for testing is when symptoms are present or 4-5 days after exposure if asymptomatic.
- Covid-19 serology (Antibody testing): This is a blood test and is used to detect a prior infection. It typically takes 2-4 weeks to develop antibodies after an infection. The turnaround time of this test is 24-72 hours and cross reactivity with other types of corona viruses is possible. The specimen is collected at our office (a $25.00 administrative fee applies) and is sent to Quest Lab for testing. Please note that a positive test for antibodies does not indicate immunity to infection with SARS-CoV2 as it is not known whether the antibodies generated by prior infection are protective or how long such a protection might last.
If you have any questions about which test is needed for your child, please discuss with your provider.
If you wish to be tested, please use your Keona Account to send us a request as well as your reason for wanting testing. If you do not have a Keona account, please click here to set one up quickly and easily.
Once your request is received, our office will contact your regarding your appointment time.
As COVID testing is relatively new, we ask that you read FACT sheets to better understand the benefits and risks of testing. You will be asked to sign a waiver acknowledging these risks, your understanding of the processing of these tests including patient responsibility for charges not covered by your insurance company. Please see below for additional information.
